Although the majority of chemicals in cosmetic products pose little or absolutely no risk, dozens have been linked to substantial health issues, including cancer, reproductive and neurological harm, and developmental delays. Chemicals in cosmetics get into the body through ingestion, inhalation, and internal use, and lead to the same problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Contaminants and chemicals linked to cancer are found in food, water, and several other commonly used products. However, no classification of consumer products is susceptible to less government direction than cosmetics, including Lip Polish (Venus). Though many of the chemicals and contaminants in cosmetics likely pose very little risk, exposure to a few is linked to worrying health issues, including cancer.
