Chemicals in cosmetics gain entry to a person's body through inhalation, the skin, and ingestion, and cause similar problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals linked to cancer can be found in food, water, and several other everyday products. But, no category of consumer products is subject to less government oversight than cosmetics, including Protective Foundation SPF 15. Although most of the contaminants and chemicals in cosmetics and personal care products almost certainly pose little risk, being exposed to a few is linked to worrying health issues, including cancer.
