Although most chemicals in beauty products present very little or zero threat, several have been linked with significant medical issues, including developmental delays and cancer. Chemicals in cosmetics invade a person's body through the skin, inhalation, ingestion and internal use, and cause similar problems as food chemicals, per this site.
