While most chemicals in cosmetics pose slight or absolutely no risk, dozens have been associated to serious medical conditions, including developmental delays and cancer. Cosmetic chemicals gain entry to the body through the skin and inhalation, and lead to similar problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals and contaminants linked to cancer are found in water, food, and lots of other commonly used products. Yet, no group of consumer products is subject to less government management than cosmetics, including specific oily hair shampoo. While many of the chemicals in cosmetics and personal care products probably present little risk, being exposed to a few has been linked to worrying health issues, including cancer.
