Though most chemicals in cosmetics pose little or no danger, several dozen are linked to severe health problems, such as cancer, and neurological harm. Chemicals in cosmetics get into the body through inhalation, ingestion, and the skin, and lead to the same problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Contaminants and chemicals linked to cancer are found in food and lots of other ordinary items. Yet, no group of consumer items is susceptible to less government oversight than cosmetics and other personal care products, including Medicated Lip Balm. While many of the chemicals and contaminants in cosmetics almost certainly pose very little risk, subjection to a few has been linked to major health conditions, such as cancer.
