Though the majority of chemicals in beauty products pose slight or zero threat, several dozen are associated to severe health issues, such as developmental delays and cancer. Cosmetic chemicals gain entry to a person's body through the skin and inhalation, and pose similar problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals linked to cancer can be found in food, water, and lots of other everyday items.
