While many chemicals in cosmetics pose little or no risk, several have been linked to severe health problems, including cancer, and neurological harm. Chemicals in cosmetics gain entry to the body through the skin, inhalation, ingestion and internal use, and pose the same problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals associated with cancer can be found in food, water, and lots of other commonly used products. Yet, no classification of consumer products is accountable to less government inspection than cosmetics and other personal products, including Suave Body Wash Exfoliating Apricot and Orange Blossom. Although many of the chemicals and contaminants in cosmetics almost certainly pose very little risk, exposure to a few has been associated with major health problems, including cancer.
