While the majority of chemicals in cosmetics present very little or no danger, some have been linked with serious medical problems, such as developmental delays and cancer. Cosmetic chemicals can enter the body through ingestion, inhalation, and internal use, and lead to the same risks as food chemicals, per this site.

Contaminants and chemicals associated with cancer are found in water, food, and various other commonly used goods. Yet, no kind of consumer goods is accountable to less government oversight than cosmetics, including cheek stain. While most of the chemicals and contaminants in cosmetics likely present little risk, exposure to some is associated with substantial health conditions, including cancer.
