While the majority of chemicals in cosmetic products present very little or no threat, several dozen have been associated with serious health problems, such as cancer, reproductive and neurological harm, and developmental delays. Chemicals in cosmetics get into the body through inhalation, the skin, and ingestion, and pose similar problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Contaminants and chemicals linked to cancer can be found in food, water, and several other ordinary products. However, no classification of consumer products is susceptible to less government inspection than cosmetics and other personal care products, including Medicated Apricot Scrub. Although many of the chemicals and contaminants in cosmetics almost certainly present minimal risk, exposure to a few has been linked to critical health concerns, such as cancer.
