While most chemicals in cosmetic products pose very little or absolutely no risk, several dozen have been associated to serious medical conditions, including cancer, and neurological harm. Cosmetic chemicals get into the body through the skin, inhalation, ingestion and internal use, and pose the same problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals and contaminants associated with cancer can be found in food, water, and various other everyday products. But, no area of consumer products is susceptible to less government inspection than cosmetics, including Liquid Eye Liner. Although most of the contaminants and chemicals in cosmetics and personal care products almost certainly present little risk, exposure to a few is associated with worrying health concerns, such as cancer.
