Chemicals in cosmetics enter the body through inhalation, the skin, and ingestion, and pose the same problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Contaminants and chemicals associated with cancer can be found in food, water, and a lot of other commonly used items. But, no area of consumer items is susceptible to less government direction than cosmetics and other personal products, including extremicils extra-volume mascara.
