While many chemicals in cosmetics pose slight or absolutely no risk, several dozen are linked to considerable health issues, such as developmental delays and cancer. Chemicals in cosmetics get into the body through the skin, inhalation, ingestion and internal use, and cause the same problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals and contaminants associated with cancer can be found in food, water, and lots of other commonly used items.
