Though the majority of chemicals in cosmetics present hardly any or zero risk, several dozen have been linked with severe health problems, such as cancer, and neurological harm. Cosmetic chemicals can enter a person's body through the skin, inhalation, ingestion and internal use, and cause similar problems as food chemicals, per this site.
