While most chemicals in cosmetic products present very little or zero risk, several dozen have been linked to substantial medical conditions, including cancer, and neurological harm. Chemicals in cosmetics can enter a person's body through the skin and inhalation, and lead to the same problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Contaminants and chemicals linked to cancer are found in food, water, and several other ordinary items. Yet, no type of consumer items is subject to less government direction than cosmetics and other personal care products, including Eye Liner (Plum). Though most of the chemicals and contaminants in cosmetics almost certainly pose minimal risk, exposure to a few has been linked to critical health conditions, such as cancer.
