While many chemicals in cosmetic products pose limited or zero risk, several dozen are associated with severe health problems, such as cancer, reproductive and neurological harm, and developmental delays. Chemicals in cosmetics enter the body through inhalation, ingestion, and the skin, and pose similar risks as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals and contaminants associated with cancer are found in food, water, and lots of other everyday items. But, no classification of consumer items is accountable to less government oversight than cosmetics and other personal care products, including lipsticks & lip glosses. While most of the contaminants and chemicals in cosmetics and personal care products very likely present little risk, exposure to a few is associated with worrying health disorders, including cancer.
