Although most chemicals in cosmetics present very little or no threat, some have been associated with substantial health problems, including cancer, reproductive and neurological harm, and developmental delays. Cosmetic chemicals gain entry to the body through internal use, the skin, and inhalation, and cause the same problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Contaminants and chemicals associated with cancer are found in food and lots of other commonly used products. Still, no classification of consumer products is subject to less government oversight than cosmetics, including NARS Single Eyeshadow. Though most of the contaminants and chemicals in cosmetics and personal care products almost certainly present little risk, exposure to some has been associated with serious health problems, including cancer.
