Though many chemicals in beauty products and cosmetics pose limited or no risk, several have been associated with serious health problems, such as cancer, and neurological harm. Chemicals in cosmetics get into the body through the skin and inhalation, and lead to similar problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Contaminants and chemicals associated with cancer are found in food, water, and many other commonly used products. Still, no type of consumer products is susceptible to less government inspection than cosmetics and other personal care products, including Coconut-vanilla nourishing lip balm.
