Although the majority of chemicals in cosmetic products present little or absolutely no threat, some have been linked to severe health problems, such as developmental delays and cancer. Cosmetic chemicals get into the body through inhalation, the skin, and ingestion, and pose similar problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals and contaminants associated with cancer can be found in food and many other ordinary goods. Yet, no category of consumer goods is subject to less government oversight than cosmetics, including CHARLOTTE'S JEWEL LIPS. While most of the contaminants and chemicals in cosmetics and personal care products very likely present very little risk, being exposed to a few is associated with serious health issues, such as cancer.
