While most chemicals in cosmetic products pose very little or absolutely no threat, several dozen have been linked to severe medical conditions, including cancer, and neurological harm. Cosmetic chemicals can enter a person's body through inhalation, ingestion, and the skin, and pose similar problems as food chemicals, per this site.
