While the majority of chemicals in cosmetic products pose very little or zero threat, several dozen have been associated to severe health conditions, including cancer, reproductive and neurological harm, and developmental delays. Chemicals in cosmetics can enter the body through the skin, inhalation, ingestion and internal use, and lead to the same problems as food chemicals, per this site.
