Although the majority of chemicals in cosmetic products present slight or no threat, several dozen have been linked with serious health issues, including cancer, reproductive and neurological harm, and developmental delays. Chemicals in cosmetics gain entry to the body through inhalation, the skin, and ingestion, and pose the same risks as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals and contaminants linked to cancer are found in water, food, and various other everyday items.
