Although the majority of chemicals in cosmetics pose limited or absolutely no risk, several have been associated with significant medical conditions, including developmental delays and cancer. Cosmetic chemicals can enter the body through the skin and inhalation, and cause similar problems as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals and contaminants associated with cancer can be found in food, water, and several other ordinary products. But, no classification of consumer products is subject to less government inspection than cosmetics and other personal care products, including Lip Gloss (Shade Grape Jelly). Though most of the contaminants and chemicals in cosmetics almost certainly present little risk, subjection to a few has been associated with serious health issues, including cancer.
