Chemicals in cosmetics get into a person's body through inhalation, ingestion, and the skin, and pose the same risks as food chemicals, per this site.

Chemicals and contaminants associated with cancer are found in food, water, and a lot of other commonly used items. However, no group of consumer items is subject to less government management than cosmetics, including Powder Bronzer (Shade Tawny). Although most of the chemicals and contaminants in cosmetics almost certainly present little risk, exposure to some is associated with worrying health problems, including cancer.
